Distinguished District 38 Toastmasters

Sometimes a speaker will run over the suggested timeframe, and continue speaking even after the red timing signal has been shown. Any suggestions?

This is a very appropriate question for any club that wishes to run a meeting according to schedule. Here is a suggestion for the club officers: discuss options that are appropriate for your club and then share your thoughts with your membership to agree upon a procedure. I have seen an organization ring a bell at which point the speaker needs to end his talk immediately. At another club, the agreement was to give the speaker 60 seconds into the red time and then s/he rises and begins applauding with the membership following that lead and joining in. Ken Krawchuck shares this experience: " I used the same trick when I moderated a presidential debate back in March. Of course one of the candidates used it to his advantage -- he ALWAYS ran overtime and came to his key point just as the timer stood to applaud. That way he got thunderous applause for his every answer. Goes to show."

AMAZING ANNIVERSARIES	You’re How Old?
	It is amazing to think that some of our clubs have been in existence for half a century and more. It is a testimony to the fact that Toastmasters is an organization that brings value and benefits to its members. Philadelphia's First Toastmasters Club was founded in 1947 and celebrates its 61st Anniversary. Valley Forge Club celebrates its 56th Anniversary, having chartered in 1952. CNH America Club celebrates 40 years and ASTM celebrates 28 years. District 38 extends its congratulations to each of the clubs and wonderful members who are celebrating their anniversaries in October and November!
